The Self Evident Truths project is a photographic document of 10,000 people in the USA that identify as anything other than 100% straight – as in, anywhere on the LGBTQ spectrum in any way, even 1% gay.
Created by artist iO Tillett Wright, the aim of the project is to humanize a vast community through the simplicity of their faces, showing that we come in all shapes, sizes, races, and social strata, thus making it harder for people to discriminate.
We are going to create an installation with all 10,000 portraits on the lawn in front of The Washington Monument, likely in 2016 before the next presidential election.
There will be a large photo book, organized by people's self-assigned percentage, showing the face of the full spectrum of human sexuality.
Once iO has shot 10,000 portraits, the project will become open source, allowing participants to submit their own photos and stories online, thus creating an ever-expanding database.
Images will be disseminated using various methods, in an effort to influence policy makers to vote in favor of equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
We Are You T-Shirt
Sales of the We Are You T-Shirt (and tote bags and stickers) have helped the Self Evident Truths campaign by raising thousands of dollars in funding for photography, tour expenses, and eventually the art installation of all 10,000 portraits in Washington DC in 2016.
Thanks to celebrity support, the t-shirt has gained wider exposure and given greater awareness to the Self Evident Truths Project.

Self Evident Truths
New York & London, 2012 – current
A constantly evolving project, Self Evident Truths has grown from a simple website design favor, to a shared passion. In early 2012, iO Tillett Wright approached me to create a website for her project – a cause I didn't have to think twice about.
With little to no funds and 100% volunteer basis, it's amazing what can be accomplished with passionate supporters and a grassroots movement. The project has developed an international following, with the aid of celebrity backers across different industries, popularized a hashtag (#WEAREYOU), and propelled itself toward lawmaking influence with an art installation aimed at The Washington Monument in 2016.
